Trade Me

Trade Me The close encounters between First Nations people, the Hudson's Bay Company and the fur trade history of Canada and are explored by artist Keesic Douglas. The artist navigates through the constructed image of “Indian” with a mixed media installation that includes documentation of the artist performing a canoe voyage up the Humber River to the Hudson Bay Company HBC store. Upon destination Douglas attempts to trade the famous HBC blanket for the return of his great grandfather’s pelts. His act parodies the fur trade in Canada, a history that led to the exploration of the country and the formation of the oldest Canadian company but at the destruction and expense of First Nations cultures.
