Noel Coward's Brief Encounter A chance meeting that evolves into a romantic, but illicit love affair in 1930s England shows how invigorating and devastating it can be to be ruled by emotion. Laura and Alec are both married, but after meeting each other at the train station, they cannot resist each other’s company. The couple live for Thursdays, when they get together to see a film or sip champagne. It’s a romance played out in secret to the beat of train timetables while they realize their time together cannot last. The original script made an ironic comment on the mores of the British middle class, but Emma Rice’s post-modern adaptation pokes fun at the sentimental romanticism considered so risque at the time.
