Red River Bicentenary

Please refer to website for detailed information. http://www.redriver200.ca 2 September SELKIRK SETTLERS ANNUAL PARADE Where: Waterfront Drive and George Avenue Scottish Thistle Monument to The Forks When: 12:30 PM Come out, join the fun and enjoy the wonderful music, colourful tartans and friendly companionship that come so easily when surrounded by Scots. The Selkirk Settlers Annual Parade is a lively and colourful event that celebrates the arrival of the Selkirk Settlers to the area now known as the City of Winnipeg. In this bicentenary year, the current Lord Selkirk of Douglas and his wife Lady Selkirk will act September 4th - ARRIVAL CEREMONY Where: La Verendrye Park, Tache Avenue across from St. Boniface Hospital When: 11:30 AM to 6:00 PM Take a 200-year step back in time as members of the Manitoba Living History Society recreate elements of the original ceremony that took place on the exact spot where Governor Miles Macdonell and the Hudson's Bay Company exchanged historic Transfer of Land documents. The current Lord Selkirk of Douglas will participate along with costumed animators. The day's activities will include a canoe arrival, musket salutes, a replica of the 5th Earl's flag, musical entertainment, light refreshments and more. You will see a quern, a foot lathe, heritage carpenter tools, spinning wheel, children's games, a tipi display, a Red River cart and horse and more depicting what life was like in the Selkirk Settlement in its formative years. There will also be displays by the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and other organizations. September 6th - Selkirk Ceremony - The Mayor of Selkirk will host and present keys to the city to James Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, Baron Selkirk of Douglas. September 6th - Peguis Rededication Ceremony - A rededication ceremony will be held at the historic old St. Peter's Dynevor Anglican Church and Cemetery. This will be a tribute to the memory of Chief Peguis, friend and benefactor to the settlers. September 7th - Pageant/Ceilidh - The Pageant/Ceilidh will depict the Selkirk Settlers arriving in Canada. This will be done through music/song, dance and narration. After the Pageant, simple participation dances will take place, with a sing-along. A reception after the programme will feature light Scottish fare. Sepember 8th - Banquet - A formal dinner will be held at Winnipeg Convention Centre, coordinated by the St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg on behalf of the Bicentenary of the Red River Selkirk Settlement Committee. The event will begin with a reception at 6:00 PM, with dinner at 7:00 PM. Special guests in attendance will be announced later. Attire is business formal, mess kit, highland dress, or black tie. Tickets are $100 per person and sponsor tables are available. September 9th - Non-Denominational Church Service - CHURCH SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING Where: St. John's Cathedral, 135 Anderson Avenue When: 10:00 AM, with smudging ceremony at 9:30 AM All are welcome to join in an Anglican service of Communion, followed by a light lunch. Guided cemetery tours many of the original Red River Settlers are buried here will be available after the service - be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. div. Event Details.
